The NRA Personal Protection In The Home course teaches the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and effective use of a handgun for personal and family protection inside the home. This is an eight‑hour course designed for responsible, experienced handgun owners who want to build practical defensive skills and develop a comprehensive home‑safety strategy.

Students learn basic defensive shooting techniques, strategies for creating a safer home environment, how to respond to a violent confrontation, and key legal considerations related to the use of force. The course also covers selecting a handgun for self‑defense and opportunities for continued skill development.

As part of this course, students participate in approximately three hours of advanced firearms training and live‑fire defensive drills, focusing on practical skills such as movement, defensive accuracy, threat engagement, and safe gun handling under stress.

Participants receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection In The Home, the NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, and a course completion certificate.
